Simaz & Trice fall in University Nationals Finals
4/26 -The University Nationals attracted some of the best collegiate wrestlers
in the country to Akron, Ohio this weekend and 8 Michigan Grapplers came
away with all-american honors, including two 2007 graduates who made the
Allegan native and Cornell freshman Cam Simaz lost via fall to Clayon Foster
to finish 2nd at 96kg. He then forfeited his true second match to finish 3rd.
Simaz was a 3x Michigan state champ and was an all-american for Cornell
Former 2x Highland Park state champ Jarod Trice fell in the finals as well, losing 1-0, 1-0 to Zach Rey of Lehigh at 120kg. Trice won his true second match 1-0, 1-0 over Jordan Johnson to finish runner-up at 120kg. The CMU freshman was an NCAA Division 1 qualifier this year for the Chipps.
NCAA champ Franklin Gomez of MSU came all the way back to finish 3rd at 60kg after losing to 2008 NCAA champ Coleman Scott yesterday in the round of 16. Gomez scored a big win over former NCAA finalist Jayson Ness of Minnesota in the wrestlebacks, then won his final 4 bouts with surrendering a period to finish 3rd. Also earning all-american honors for MSU was Anthony Jones at 70kg, who finished 8th.
Ryan Cubberly of Central Michigan finished 3rd at 66kg with a hard fought win over Tyler Nauman of Pitt in the consolationfinals. Cubberly then lost his true second match to Kevin Levalley. The Chippewas had 5 all-americans in all led by Trice and Cubberly. Also earning all-american honors for CMU were Conor Beebe (8th at 60kg), Jeff Shutich (8th at 66kg), and Tyler Grayson (7th at 74kg).
