Nick Humes commits to Michigan State
9/3 - Stevensville Lakeshore senior Nick Humes informed Michigan
Grappler yesterday that he has verbally commited to wrestle for Michigan
State University.
"MSU has always been a part of my life", said Humes, "I respect the
coaching staff and I know that at MSU, I will not only become a good
wrestler but the coaching staff will also develop me as an upstanding
individual."
Humes, who is the #12 ranked recruit in the state this year, had a breakout
performance at the Disney Duals this summer where he went undefeated
while wrestling for the Runner-Up team, Michigan Freeze. He received
attention from top programs such as Central Michigan, Michigan,
Minnesota, and North Carolina, but in the end chose MSU.
Humes fell just short of winning team and individual state crowns last year
as he finished 2nd at 140lbs while wrestling for a D2 Semi-Finalist team at
Lakeshore.. He finished 3rd in the state as a freshman and sophomore and will turn his attention this year towards climbing to the top of the Divsion 2 ladder.
"The past three years I have lost the state title to the eventual state champion by a couple of points in either the semis or the finals," he said, "I want to get a state title this year. I also want to help our team get a state title for Coach Bittenbender, who will become the coach with the most wins in Michigan High School history this year. I also want to help my brother Tyler do what it takes to get into MSU with me."
The commitment from Humes gives Michigan State three verbal commitments for their incoming class of 2010. Humes joins fellow Southwest Michigander Kamron Jackson of South Haven, who will be transferring from North Idaho College following this year to wreste for the Spartans. MSU also nabbed a commitment from 215lb state champ and the #6 recruit in Michigan Nick McDiarmid earlier this summer.
Humes also wished to express some thanks for those who have helped him get to this point in his career:
"I want to thank coaches Minkel, Chandler and Williams for having confidence in my ability to succeed at the next level. I also want to thank the coaches that have helped me to this point: Jon, Jody, Eric, Leo, Matt, Bro, Smitty, Bit and Dad, and my wrestling partner Cam."
