16 State Champions highlight MWA Classic lineups

6/9 - The Third Annual MWA Classic will go

down next weekend in Hartland. The MWA

Classic was started by the Michigan

Wrestling Association in 2008 with the intent

of pitting the state's top seniors from differing

divisions against one another. In addition,

the event is used to highlight individuals who

have stood out in the Michigan wrestling

community.

DREAM TEAM PRESENTATION

Just like in the years past, Michigan

Grappler's 1st Team Dream Team will be presented prior to the start of the MWA Classic. All members of the 1st Team Dream will receive their Dream Team shirts, which are being provided by WorldWide Sport Supply, and we are asking that all members who are planning on being in attendance contact Michigan Grappler via email (admin@michigangrappler.com) to confirm your attendance.

MARQUEE MATCHUPS

This year's MWA Classic may be the most star-studded yet, as tentative matchups were announced this week by the Michigan Wrestling Association. The event will feature 18 matches and every matchup features two all-state wrestlers going at it. Four matches will pit two state champions against one another.

The marquee match of the night has to be the opening bout between a pair of 3x state champions, Nick Smith of Ida and BJ Suitor of Swan Valley. These two were slated to meet up at the State Finals this year in what would have been one of the most anticipated matchups of the weekend, however, Suitor, who was plagued by injuries, was eliminated from the Regional Tournament. Now, three months later, this matchup will finally happen next week.

The 125lb match will also feature a couple of state champs with D1 champ Ben Matthieson of Holt and 2x D4 champ Zeb Hilyard of Hudson. These guys are both going to big time in-state programs, Matthieson will be going to CMU in the fall while Hilyard will be headed to Ann Arbor to wrestle for the Wolverines.

Senior National Champ and 3x state champ Ryen Nieman will meet up with the wrestler ranked right behind him in our Power Rankings, undefeated D2 champ Jaylyn Bohl of Allegan, at 135lbs. The final state champ matchup will come at 171lbs where D1 champ Jake Dorulla will battle it out with fellow west-sider Tyler Humes of Lakeshore, the D2 champ.
