Eight Michigan preps were listed in TheOpenMat.com's initial rankings for the 2017-2018 season. Dundee senior and #1 ranked prospect in the 2018 class Brandon Whitman lead the way, earning a #3 ranking at 195 lbs. Detroit Catholic Central nabbed the most for a school with three ranked wrestlers - Ben Kamali, Kevon Davenport, and Cameron Amine.
Additionally, the University of Michigan and Michigan State had two recruits each who were ranked in their respective weight classes. The future Wolverines, Joey Silva and Will Lewan, each start the season as the #1 wrestler in their weights. For the Spartans, California native Peyton Omania starts ranked #9 at 145, while Illinois' Nate Jimenez is sloted 20th at 170.
