Lynchburg, VA - The GVSU Lakers traveled to Liberty University for the 2018 National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Duals.  They earned their thirteenth consecutive invitation to the field, with this year’s tournament consisting of 15 teams of the 160 registered in the NCWA.

GVSU entered the event as the third seed and won three duals in pool competition on day one of the tournament.  The Lakers defeated the Nittany Lions of the Penn State Wrestling Club 39-12, the Owls of Temple University by a score of 48-8, and the Apprentice School Builders, the fifth seed, by a score of 29-23.

The bout with Apprentice was a rematch of the third place bout from the 2017 National Duals.  The team result came down to the heavyweight bout where Miguel Correa (West Ottawa High School, Holland, MI) earned a fall over a nationally ranked opponent to advance the Lakers!

The three wins on Friday secured a spot in the championship bracket and maintained the third seed.  The Lakers faced the sixth seeded Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee State University in the quarterfinals.  Again, the dual would be decided by the heavyweight bout - again Correa secured a fall, over the fourth ranked heavyweight in the NCWA, to advance the Lakers to the semifinals.  The final score over the Blue Raiders was 32 to 21.

In the semifinals, GVSU faced host Liberty University.  This was the third consecutive meeting in the semifinals for these two programs, with GVSU prevailing in 2016 and Liberty taking the win in 2017.  Despite many competitive bouts, Liberty won the dual.  Once the score was unsurmountable, GVSU conceded the dual by forfeiting the final three weights - contributing to the lopsided final score of 44-6.

The placed GVSU in the third place bout for the second time in as many trips.  Behind a great team effort and victories from Sean Halverson (Mona Shores, Muskegon, MI), Brendan Hazelton (L’anse Creuse, Clinton Township, MI), Joe Posledni (Batavia, IL), Jake Sobeck (Rogers City), and Mitchell Krahulik (Grand Ledge), the Lakers prevailed over the Rams of Springfield Technological and Community College - 28 to 18.

With the third place finish, GVSU has thirteen top-six finishes in thirteen NCWA National Duals - eight of those in the top-three.
