Five wrestlers with Michigan ties competed at the Pan-Am Championships in Mexico this weekend. Winning titles were Adam Coon in Greco at 130 kg and Julia Salata at women's 65 kg. Both were dominant en route to their titles, as Coon was 3-0 with three falls and Salata scored a pair of tech falls in her two bouts.
Dalton Roberts went 2-2 at 60 kg in Greco, placing 5th. He came up one match short of medalling. He dropped a tight 1-1 decision in the 3rd place match.
Also competing but representing other countries were former MSU national champ Franklin Gomez, who represented his native Puerto Rico, and Angus Arthur, who competed for Jamaica. Gomez took Jordan Burroughs down to the wire, but was taken down at the buzzer to fall in the quarters. He would eventually battle back for bronze. Arthur, the former St. Johns state champ, was 1-2 on the tourney but reportedly became the first wrestler to win a match for Jamaica at the Pan-Ams.
