Whitman, Hillger, Parris Advance to Junior WTT Final

By MI Grappler, 05/18/19, 9:00AM EDT

Spots on the Freestyle Junior World Team will be decided this afternoon with a best 2-of-3 series beginning at 1:30 pm.  A pair of Michigan hammers have battled through the bracket for a shot a representing Team USA.

At 92 kg Dundee grad Brandon Whitman, now wrestling for North Carolina, was very impressive on Day 1, scoring quick tech fall over Kordell Norfleet and then knocking of Jakob Woodley, 5-3.  Both are NCAA Qualifiers.  Whitman will take on longtime rival Lucas Davison of Northwestern in the final.

Heavyweight is a win-win for Michiganders.  Lake Fenton 3x state champ Trent Hillger will face off against UM freshman Mason Parris for the World Team spot.  It should be an interesting matchup; during the year Parris won the only meeting during the NCAA season (9-6), but it was Hillger who stood on the All-American podium at Nationals.

Another Lake Fenton grad turned in a solid showing, as 4x state champ Jarrett Trombley will wrestle for 3rd place this afternoon.  The NC State redshirt freshman lost first round but was dominant coming through the wrestlebacks.  He'll wrestle Jevon Parrish of Nebraska in the consolation finals.

On the Senior Greco side, Dalton Roberts will wrestle for 3rd place at 60 kg.  The returning World Teamer at the weight, Roberts fell in the semis to Randon Miranda, 8-2.  His opponent for 3rd will be Taylor LaMont.

The Senior Freestyle Trials kick off at 10:00 am today as well and will have some great action leading up to the Junior Trial Finals at 1:30.  All matches can be watched live on
