UM graduate Alec Pantaleo
Five wrestlers with Michigan ties earned spots on various World Teams over the weekend. MSU redshirt freshman Peyton Omania and Fowlerville grad Dalton Roberts kicked it off by winning the U23 Greco Trials, Davison sophomore Alex Facundo won the UWW Cadet Trials, then Michigan's Alec Pantaleo and Lowell native Max Dean took home U23 Freestyle titles.
On the Greco side, Roberts was dominant all tournament long at 63 kg, up from 60 where he was previously competing. He allowed just four points all tournament long and won the best-of-three series in two straight bouts by a combined 10-0 score.
MSU's Peyton Omania's championship marks the second age-level team that he has made this offseason; he previously made the UWW Junior Greco team. Omania won a grueling three-match set with NIU's Nolan Baker. For his efforts he was awarded the Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament.
Alex Facundo qualified for the UWW Cadet Worlds for a second straight year at 71 kg. After one-point victories in the quarters and semis, Facundo dropped the first match of the final series to Blair Academy's Travis Mastrogiovanni, 4-2. The defending Bronze Medalist then rallied for two straight wins, 6-1 and 5-0, to land himself back on the World Team.
Michigan's Alec Pantaleo was totally dominant in the U23 Freestyle portion of the weekend, outscoring the opposition 69-2 en route to a championship as well as Outstanding Wrestler honors. Included in his route were 7-1 and 11-0 wins in the best-of-three series.
NCAA runner-up and Lowell grad Max Dean earned on a spot on his first career age-level World Team at 86 kg in U23 Freestyle. He defeated Richmond native Devin Skatzka in the finals with a pair of tech falls. His biggest test, however, came in the semis where he erased an 8-0 second period deficit and came back to win 10-9 over Nino Bonaccorsi of Pittsburgh.
