There's always some intrigue into scoring the individual state tournament so we decided to dive into some results from years past.  It's obviously a way in which many states decide their team state champions, which we aren't advocating for here.  It's just interesting to take a look at  how the tourneys played out relative to the team state tournament.

Team state qualifying teams are bolded, scores were calculated with a pen and pad.  Again, these are unofficial.  The state champions were those who won the Team State tournament and we are in no way discrediting those titles.  Just taking a fun look at teams who performed well at the individual state tournament.

Division 1

1.  Davison - 179
2.  Hartland - 88.5

3.  Chippewa Valley - 85

6.  Hudsonville - 60
7.  Bedford - 59

Finals
Davison def. Hartland, 47-18

Davison won their third of five straight titles and were just vastly better than the rest of the state at the time.  The finals held with Hartland finishing 2nd.  Chippewa Valley would've been 3rd; they were ousted by Utica at Team Districts.  Rockford was 5th, falling to Grand Ledge at Team Districts, who was upended by Hudsonville in the Regional.

Interesting one here with Flint Kearsley scoring the most points individually.  They knocked off Lapeer West, 30-29, at Regionals before falling to Lowell in the quarters.  Mendez-Diehl was the big match in the dual, going the way of Mendez by fall in :49.  Lowell was trailing 26-11 at the time and would win 39-26.  Sparta was 3rd individually and lost at Regionals to Lowell.

Montrose def. Roscommon, 74-2

Semifinals

Montrose def. Dundee, 33-31

Finals
Montrose def. Richmond, 62-15

Tough road for the top three individual scoring teams here.  Dundee over Caro by 7 in the quarters, Montrose over Dundee by 2 in the semis.  Yale was 4th after coming up short at Regionals versus Caro.  Shelby, who scored the 5th most points, lost to Mason County Central by 1 at Regionals.  Richmond had little issue advancing to the finals on the other side.

Bangor def. Freeland, 59-14
Martin def. Whittemore Prescott, 38-24
New Lothrop  def. St. Ignace, 56-21
Addison def. Lutheran Westland,  40-20

Semifinals
Martin def. Bangor, 43-19
New Lothrop def. Addison, 43-18

Finals
New Lothrop def. Martin, 36-33

About as close as it gets between New Lothrop and Martin.  The Hornets won the state title by 3 in a back-and-forth dual.  Then in the hypothetical individual scoring, Martin ended up holding a 0.5 point advantage.  Springport, who was not far behind individually, lost to New Lothrop by 3 at the Regional as well.  Hesperia went down to Carson City at Regionals, who'd get beaten by Martin the same day.
