UWW Juniors/U23 Recap

Michigan was well represented at every level over the weekend at the UWW Junior and U23 Nationals in Omaha.  In total, 22 wrestlers with Michigan ties finished in the top eight of their divisions.

In Junior Greco, Gaylord native Chayse LaJoie was impressive en route to a title at 60 kg, picking up four tech fall wins including one over MSU's Jordan Hamdan, who finished 5th, as well as a 10-2 win in the finals over Warren Woods Tower native David Stepanian in the finals.  Andrew Chambal also placed, finishing 4th at 55 kg.  

MSU had a pair of champs in U23 Greco as Peyton Omania won the title at 67 kg and Cam Caffey won it at 87 kg.  Both were dominant on their way to winning it, most notable was Omania's 9-1 tech over past U23 World Teamer Nolan Baker.  MSU had a pair of placers at 63 kg as well - Jackson Renicker (4th) and Matt Santos (7th).

On the Freestyle side, DCC grad Josh Edmond had a huge tournament as he won the title at 65 kg.  going 6-0 and knocking off a bunch of big names in the process.  In the finals, he scored a 10-0 tech in 1:29 over VA Tech's Bryce Andonian, who was seeded 20th at NCAA's this spring.  

Michigan true freshman Dylan Ragusin also won a title, at 57 kg, following up his strong performance at Senior Nationals.  After opening with three techs and a fall, Ragusin won 5-0 over Jesse Mendez in the semis before picking up a 13-10 win in the finals over Angelo Rini.

Davison senior Alex Facundo finished 3rd at 74 kg, losing only to eventual champ Bernie Truax in the quarters, 4-0.  In total, Facundo went 7-1 on the tournament and also picked up another win over Cael Valencia, 4-1, who he defeated at Who's Number One earlier this fall.

Rounding out the Michigan natives, Dakota's Layne Malczewski finished 4th at 86 kg for MSU, while Holly's Blake Querio was 7th at 125 kg for Michigan.  The Wolverines had two other placers - Fidel Mayora (4th 70 kg) and Chris Kim (7th 61 kg).

In U23 Freestyle, Michigan redshirt sophomore Will Lewan won the title at 70 kg.  The former Cadet World Champ didn't allow a point until the finals where he knocked off Iowa's Kaleb Young, 5-4.  CKWC athlete Youssif Hemida also won a title at 125 kg, taking down Anthony Cassioppi, also of Iowa, in the finals, 8-7.

Three Michigan natives finished top-8 in U23 Freestyle.  Rayvon Foley was 5th at 57 kg, Ian Parker was 3rd at 61 kg, and Brandon Whitman was 6th at 97 kg.  MSU's Cam Caffey was 3rd at 86 kg and Michigan had placers in Drew Mattin (7th at 61 kg) and  Andrew Davison (8th at 92 kg).
