MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Gold team won six matches including one by pin Sunday in topping Maroon, 21-13, in the Central Michigan wrestling team's annual Maroon-Gold Intrasquad dual meet at McGuirk Arena.

The Chippewas open the season on Sunday, Jan. 3 at McGuirk with a nonconference dual with Olivet College.

The Gold got a pin from two-time All-American Matt Stencel at 285 pounds in the final bout of Sunday's dual and won five other matches, all by decision. Drew Marten (133), Dresden Simon (141), Corbyn Munson (149), Johnny Lovett (157) and Landon Pelham(197) recorded the Gold's other wins.

Maroon victories came from Drew Hildebrandt (125), Jake Lowell (174) and Ben Cushman (184). Hildebrandt's win was by major decision. No match was held at 165.

Lovett, a redshirt freshman, won his match, 7-3, over Tracy Hubbard, last year's starter at 165. Hubbard dropped down to 157, his more natural spot, this season after the graduation of NCAA qualifier Logan Parks, the only starter from last season that does not return this season.

"That was probably the most-competitive match and a little bit of a surprise," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said.

Sunday's intrasquad served as a good ice-breaker, Borrelli said, as the Chippewas adjust to a season under COVID-19 restrictions.

The Chippewas qualified six wrestlers for the 2020 NCAA Championships, which were cancelled because of COVID. Hildebrandt, Simon and Stencel, three of those qualifiers, were named All-America by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Marten and Pelham also qualified for the NCAA Championships a year ago.

"I just think it was important for our guys to have an opportunity to wrestle in McGuirk Arena on the mat with a referee and a clock," Borrelli said. "We've been practicing a long time. Normally we start competing in November and we're about halfway through the season by this time.

"That was the first time we've competed in our home arena and this coming Sunday (against Olivet) will be the first time we've competed against someone else. I think our guys are just excited to have a season and just excited to be able to compete. It would be nice to have some fans and maybe we will by the end of the year."
