#19 Michigan State


MSU true freshman Chase Saldate

Michigan State started off their season with two B1G duals on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans split duals with Maryland and #14 Minnesota. In the first dual of the day, MSU downed Maryland 42-0, blanking the Terrapins for the second consecutive year. Highlights included Jake Spiess and Chase Saldate earning pins in their varsity debuts.

In the later dual, Michigan State lost to #14 Minnesota 28-6. MSU was not able to capitalize on a few winnable matches early, and they did not get on the scoreboard until the 184lb match, a match in which Layne Malczewski picked up a solid win over #20 Owen Webster. Up a weight class from last year, Cam Caffey picked up a 12-5 decision at 197lbs. In a few other notable matches, #15 Patrick McKee upset All-American #2 Rayvon Foley, and freshman Chase Saldate looked solid in a narrow 5-4 loss to #5 Brayton Lee.

The Spartans will be back on the mat next weekend at #3 Penn State.

#2 Michigan

Michigan was back in action on Saturday with a 32-6 win against Indiana to reach 3-0 in the B1G. Freshman Cam Amine started off the dual at 165lbs with a decisive win over a solid fellow freshman from Indiana in Nick South. Other freshmen to impress in the dual were Jaden Bullock and #10 Dylan Ragusin. Jaden Bullock picked up a quick tech after a 14-0 start in the first period. #10 Dylan Ragusin knocked off Senior NCAA qualifier Brock Hudkins in the featured match of the dual. Logan Massa and Mason Parris picked up pins to stay perfect on the year.

Michigan will be back in action in on January 31st in Carver-Hawkeye Arena to take on the #1 Hawkeyes.

Central Michigan

The Chippewas picked up six wins against Northern Illinois to improve to 1-1 on the year in the MAC (2-2 overall). Johnny Lovett earned a 13-5 major decision in our featured match of the dual against Michigander Anthony Gibson (Westland John Glenn). Drew Hildebrandt and Dresden Simon also picked up bonus point wins with a tech and major decision, respectively. Landon Pelham won a huge match against NCAA qualifier Gage Braun, Matt Stencel sealed the deal with a decision in the final match. 

CMU travels to Clarion next weekend for a MAC quad with Kent State and Southern Illinois Edwardsville.
