A few Michigan natives found success at the 2021 DII NCAA Championships. in St. Louis, MO, over the weekend. Most notably, Ryan Vasbinder of McKendree University won a national championship. Vasbinder, a grad of Grandville HS, entered the tournament as the 1-seed. In the semis, Vasbinder beat the 5-seed Ryg of Upper Iowa 6-0. In the finals, Vasbinder was extremely dominant, knocking off the 3-seed Abney of Central Oklahoma 12-0.
Another Michigan native to earn All-American honors was Branson Proudlock. Proudlock, a grad of Gibraltar Carlson HS, had an outstanding season for Findlay (OH). In the quarterfinals, Proudlock lost a tough 5-3 decision to the 4-seed Royal of Newberry. Proudlock then won an exciting 7-5 overtime match in the blood round over Kuster of Drury to secure All-American honors.
Other Michigan Grapplers to qualify for the national tournament included Sean O'Hearon (Lake Erie College, Springport HS), James Penfold (Lake Erie College, Goodrich HS), and Nicholas Mason (Tiffin University, Utica HS).
