Saturday was the first day of the 2021-22 competition season for most Michigan colleges. The MSU Open at Jenison Field House in East Lansing has become a staple of the opening weekend of the college wrestling season. The Open field was loaded with a plethora of returning All Americans, NCAA qualifiers, and impact incoming freshmen.
Michigan and Michigan State both had a champion in the Open division on the day. At 141lbs, Chance Lamer (Michigan) won his first match by major decision over Zeamer of Oklahoma. Lamer then picked up medical forfeits in both the quarters and semis before winning the title with a 10-4 decision over Saenz of Cal Poly.
If there were an outstanding wrestler award, Chase Saldate (MSU) would have a solid case for the award after his performance at 157lbs. He picked up 4 falls and a decision on the day, including a pin in just 37 seconds in the finals against Zuunbayan of Northwestern. Three of Saldate's four falls came in the first period on the day.
Central Michigan and Michigan State each had a champ in the freshman/sophomore division. At 141lbs, Will Grater (CMU) earned a 10-1 major decision over Ferguson of Oklahoma in the finals. At 165lbs, Caleb Fish (Michigan State) picked up a tech, a fall, and three decisions on the day to win a title. Fish beat Robert Major (Indiana) 6-3 in the finals.
Michigan will be home against CSU Bakersfield at Cliff Keen arena on Sunday. CMU is in action next weeked at the Journeyman Classic in Manheim, PA. Michigan State takes a week off before heading to the Navy Classic on November 20th.
