College Week 8 Preview

By MI Grappler, 01/06/22, 7:30PM EST

#3 Michigan vs #23 Pittsburgh

This match was a late addition to the schedule for Michigan after the dual against Arizona State was canceled on January 3rd. The Wolverines will travel to Pittsburgh on Sunday to take on a very solid Pitt team. The Panthers have 7 wrestlers ranked by Intermat, which creates 7 ranked matches in this dual, including two top-10 matchups. The biggest question of the dual is whether Nick Suriano will make his season debut for the Wolverines at 125lbs.

Projected Lineups:
125 - #18 Jack Medley vs #31 Gage Curry
133 - #8 Dylan Ragusin vs #7 Micky Phillippi
141 - #3 Stevan Micic vs #23 Cole Matthews
149 - Cole Mattin vs Luke Kemerer
157 - #15 Will Lewan vs #21 Elijah Cleary
165 - #10 Cam Amine vs #13 Jake Wentzel
174 - #6 Logan Massa vs Hunter Kernan
184 - #2 Myles Amine vs #31 Gregg Harvey
197 - #9 Pat Brucki vs #8 Nino Bonaccorsi
285 - #2 Mason Parris vs Jake Slinger

Match to Watch
As previously stated, there are 7 ranked matches here, including two top-10 matches.  However, the match to watch is going to be at 165lbs. Cam Amine vs Jake Wentzel is a matchup of two All Americans from last year at 165lbs. Amine had an outstanding freshman year to finish 7th, while Jake Wentzel had an incredible run to the finals before falling in the championship match.

Pitt is a very tough dual team, but the Wolverines should have too much firepower here. Potential bonus points from Logan Massa, Myles Amine, and Mason Parris should be enough to give the Wolverines a double digit win.

Michigan State vs #7 Ohio State

The Spartans start off the B1G dual season with a tough home match against Ohio State on Saturday. MSU is coming off a great showing at the Southern Scuffle where they took 3rd with one champ and four placers. MSU will be looking to ride that momentum into their match with the Buckeyes.

Projected Lineups:
125 - Tristan Lujan vs #14 Malik Heinselman
133 - #11 Rayvon Foley vs Dylan Koontz
141 - Jordan Hamdan vs #22 Dylan D'Emilio
149 - Eddie Homrock vs #22 Sammy Sasso
157 - #20 Chase Saldate vs #26 Bryce Hepner
165 - Caleb Fish vs #7 Carson Kharchla
174 - Nate Jiminez vs #7 Ethan Smith
184 - #29 Layne Malczewski vs #7 Kaleb Romero
197 - #19 Cam Caffey vs #20 Gavin Hoffman
285 - Brad Wilton vs #12 Tate Orndorff

Match to Watch
197lbs is the match to watch in this dual. Caffey is a 3x NCAA qualifier for the Spartans that has fallen just short of reaching the podium. Hoffman was a big time recruit out of high school that hasn't hit his stride yet on the college scene. In their lone meeting, Caffey beat Hoffman last season 3-2.

On paper, the #7 Buckeyes are favored in 7 of the 10 matches. However, the Spartans are wrestling well, and there is some upset potential. The 184lb match is a good candidate for an upset, where the Spartans have returning NCAA qualifier Layne Malczewski. Barring multiple upsets, the Buckeyes should be favored to win a competitive dual.

Central Michigan vs Northern Illinois

The Chippewas are kicking off 2022 MACtion in a dual at Northern Illinois tomorrow at 8pm EST. CMU won last year's meeting 22-14. However, both lineups look much different than a season ago. 157 and 184 are projected to be the only rematches from last season's dual.

Projected Lineups:
125 - Brock Bergelin vs Bryce West
133 - Vince Perez vs Lucian Brink
141 - #12 Dresden Simon vs Jaivon Jones
149 - #28  Corbyn Munson vs Anthony Cheloni
157 - #19 Johnny Lovett vs Anthony Gibson
165 - Tracy Hubbard vs #17 Izzak Olejnik
174 - Bret Fedewa vs #22 Mason Kauffman
184 - Ben Cushman vs #20 Brit Wilson
197 - Aaron Bolo vs Tristin Guaman
285 - #9 Matt Stencel vs Terrese Aaron

Match to Watch
Our match to watch here is at 157lbs. Lovett had a nice NCAA tournament a season ago, finishing 2-2 after upsetting the #7 seed. Anthony Gibson is a native of Westland John Glenn HS and having a solid season for the Huskies. The two met earlier this season at the MSU Open in a match that Lovett won 3-2.

Northern Illinois has a lot of firepower in their lineup from 165 through 184. If CMU can limit bonus points, they will be in a great position to win this dual. Swing matches at 125, 133, and 197 will be important, and the Chippewas will be looking for big bonus points from Stencel at heavyweight. We have CMU winning a close dual.
