Michigan dropped its first dual of the season to #1 Penn State by a score of 29-6.  The Wolverines claimed just two matches and lost the final five bouts by a combined 10 points, including four straight top-10 matchups at the upperweights. Olympian Stevan Micic was out of the lineup at 141lbs, and Cole Mattin had to injury default at 149lbs. That set the tone for the rest of the dual. At 174lbs, Massa dropped a close 3-2 decision to #1 Carter Starocci in the match of the night. Massa was close to scoring numerous times, including a near takedown on the edge of that mat at the end of the match, but defending national champ Starocci hung on for the victory. Nick Suriano and Will Lewan both won by decision for the Wolverines.

#3 Michigan bounced back from its first loss of the season in dominant fashion, claiming eight matches en route to a 32-8 win against #14 Rutgers. Suriano (formerly of Rutgers) and Massa picked up bonus points for the Wolverines, while Myles Amine won via forfeit. Brucki won the marquee match-up of the night against #6 Greg Bulsak. All American Brucki used a slick low single early in OT to claim the victory over MAC champ Bulsak.

What's Next
Michigan is at home Friday night against #13 Minnesota before heading to Maryland on Sunday afternoon.

Upsets by Layne Malczewski and Cam Caffey against top-10 wrestlers proved to be the deciding factor in Michigan State's upset over #15 Rutgers. Malczewski and #5 Poznanski got into a scramble in the first period where Malczewski came out on top and ended up with the fall just 2:21 into the match. Caffey used a takedown and two sets of nearfal in the third period to get the major against #6 Bulsak. Rayvon Foley, Chase Saldate, and Caleb Fish also picked up wins for the Spartans.

Michigan State wrestled tough but dropped the dual 28-9 against #1 Penn State. Michigan Stave moved to 8-2 overall and 3-2 in the Big Ten. The Spartans picked up a big upset win at 197lbs as Cam Caffey took down 2x All American and NCAA finalist Max Dean (a graduate of Lowell HS). A takedown in the second period was the deciding factor on Caffey's 3-2 win. Rayvon Foley and Chase Saldate also picked up wins for Michigan State.

What's Next
Michigan State has the weekend off before traveling to Maryland on February 4th.

CMU started off the weekend with a solid 33-6 win over MAC foe Northern Illinois. Corbyn Munson, Johnny Lovett, and Matt Stencel all earned bonus points for the Chippewas, while Ben Cushman won by forfeit. Two former Michigan standouts started for the Huskies: Anthony Gibson (Westland John Glenn HS) and Alec Rees (Sparta HS).

On Sunday, CMU traveled to Edwardsville for a tri-meet with #24 South Dakota State and host school SIUE. Against SDSU, CMU won 6 of 10 matches to upset the 24th ranked Jackrabbits. Bergelin started off the dual with a pin, and the Chippewas built a 15-4 lead heading into intermission. Fedewa and Stencel put the dual away with decisions in the second half of the dual. Fedewa, a graduate of St. Johns high school, had a huge win in sudden victory over #10 Devos.

Bergelin, Simon, Munson, Lovett, and Stencel all improved to 3-0 on the weekend as CMU beat SIUE 34-3. Bergelin, Perez, Lovett, and Stencel all earned bonus points, while Dresden Simon won the match of the dual. Simon picked up a decision over #31 Saul Ervin in the second tiebreaker.

What's Next
CMU will look to improve to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the MAC at home this Sunday against Ohio.
