The Michigan Border Brawl took place Tuesday night in Detroit to kick off the Championship week. Wrestlers from several different states gathered at the Huntington Place Riverview Ballroom to showcase great wrestling. 13 wrestlers represented the state of Michigan, and over half of them ended the night with a win. I was able to sit down and interview some of the competitors,
Jamarcus Smith, a senior from Detroit Mumford High School, won his first state title two weeks ago at Ford Field. He said he was eager to compete again at the Border Brawl.
“I knew I couldn’t take a break, breaks aren’t good, I just went right back into it after I got the call to compete again.” Smith said. Smith won his match 8-4 against Christian Kiser of Oklahoma, and he’s looking forward to competing at Fargo and wrestling at the next level.
Jacob Gonzales, a senior from Holly High School, is coming off his third state title two weeks ago. On Tuesday, Gonzales lost his match 6-4 to Max Maganya of Iowa, but looks forward to the coming months of Freestyle season. Gonzales will wrestle at Brown University this upcoming Fall.
Bryn Greene, a junior from Howell High School, placed third at the girls state tournament two weeks ago. Greene, and the rest of the girls who competed, wrestled freestyle last night. Greene handled her opponent with a 6-1 win. She said she’s looking forward to competing at Fargo and the World Team Trials this Spring/Summer.
Alexis Lazar, an 8th grader from Plymouth Christian Academy, won her match against High Schooler Kate Cooper of Missouri. Lazar ended up winning the match by tech fall and looks forward to wrestling at the next level. Though, Lazar wasn’t the only 8th Grader to defeat a high schooler on Tuesday night, Cecilia Williams of Williams Wrestling Club defeated Angelina Vargas of Missouri by fall.
Eliana Bommarito, a senior from Hartland High School, just won her fourth state title two weeks ago in Detroit. On Tuesday, Bommarito defeated Faith Spicer of Missouri by fall. Bommarito says she is looking forward to taking a small break, but is looking to wrestle in college next year.
Connor Greer, a freshman from Bay City John Glenn, placed second in the state tournament two weeks ago. On Tuesday, Greer wrestled freestyle for the first time ever but lost his match to Christian Kiser of Oklahoma.
“My focus was to not roll across my back, because I have tendency to do that in folkstyle.” Greer looks forward to training in freestyle and competing at Fargo.
Sabrina Nauss, a sophomore from Brighton High School, won her second state title two weeks ago in Detroit. On Tuesday, Nauss defeated Savannah Isaac of Ohio by tech fall.
“I enjoy freestyle more than folkstyle, I don’t like being on bottom and I enjoy being on my feet more.” Nauss said.
Nauss is looking forward to wrestling at the Viper Pit in West Virginia and the World Team Trials in Texas in the coming months.
