Team Michigan had 2 placers in the 16U Men's division in Fargo this year. Jackson Blum of Lowell took 7th in perhaps the deepest weight class in the tournament, while incoming freshman Jarrett Smith put together an incredible tournament to take 3rd.
Blum won his first four matches before running into the eventual champ #5 Marcus Blaze of Ohio in the quarterfinals. Blaze won a tightly contested 6-4 match. Blum secured a spot on the podium with a solid 6-2 win over Christian Fretwell of Florida. Blum then lost to #6 Bo Bassett of Pennsylvania to drop to the 7th place match. In the 7th place match, Blum beat Manuel Saldate of Nevada 10-6. Great tournament for Blum, as he secured All American honors for the second time!
At 88lbs, Smith lost in the first round to Caleb Noble of Wisconsin before rattling off 6 straight wins to reach the third place match. In the third place match, Smith cruised to a 7-0 victory over Carson Craft of Oklahoma. The third place finish caps off an outstanding Summer for the incoming freshman,
Wyatt Lees (94lbs), Philip Lamka (160lbs), and Joel Simon (220lbs) all put together solid tournaments, reaching day 2. Lees reached the quarterfinals before losing to the eventual 4th and 8th place finishers. At 160lbs, Lamka went 5-2 on the weekend and narrowly missed a spot on the podium. At 220lbs, Joel Simon went 4-2 to miss out on All-American honors.
