State Tourney - Day 1 Notes and Finals Matchups

DCC senior Dylan Gilcher advanced to his fourth final in search of joining an elite club of 4x MI State Champs.  He'll take on Brighton's Travis Richardson in the finals.  Colby Klinger of Mattawan won a 3 vs 4 matchup over Schelb of Midland in the bloodhound, 14-3.

Three straight majors for DCC junior Darius Marines puts him in a position to compete for this third title.  Opposite him will be Hartland junior Vinnie Abbey, who scored three decisions en route to the finals.  Forest Hills Northern senior Daniel Elwell knocked off #5 and #6 opponents to make the semis.

A district and regional finals rematch will go down here as top-seeded Wyatt Lees of DCC takes on Brice LaFleur of Saline in a battle of freshmen.  LaFleur won on overtime match over Walkowiak in the semis, after Walkowiak won an overtime match over Holt in the quarters.

By far the craziest bracket in D1.  Clarkston's Archer Anderson rattled off three straight upset victories to advance to the finals.  Hartland's Bodie Abbey will be his opponent after taking out defending champ McAlary in the semis.  An absolutely brutal blood round match between Holt's Mosher and DCC's Dominguez saw Mosher take a 4-3 decision.

Defending champ Caleb Weiand of Dakota will take on sophomore Josh Vasquez of Grandville in the finals here.  Weiand won their previous meeting this year, 7-2.  Of the four blood round matches, three went to overtime - Aulbach over Huepenbecker, Cook over Lopez, and Eberhard over Wilson.  Both Lopez and Wilson were state finalists a year ago.

Davison's Caden Horwath rounds out the three wrestlers in D1 looking for their fourth state title - he picked up a fall and two majors on his way to the championship match.  He'll square off with Grosse Pointe South sophomore Wyatt Hepner in the finals.  Some really good blood round matches here as well, with Astorga winning 4-3 over Fielder and DiPonio winning 8-4 over Johnson.

Two-time state champ Drew Heethuis of DCC faces off with returning finalist Elijah Bunn of Rockford in a 1 vs 2 final.  Both have been dominant on their paths to the finals.  Two regional results were flipped in the blood round as Easton Culver and Connor Palazzolo both avenged losses from two weeks ago.

Two techs and a pin put Davison's Justin Gates into his third state final.  His opponent will be DCC junior Mason Stewart, who scored two falls and a major en route to his first individual final.  Franklin's Tyler Garrett won an OT shootout in the blood round, and  TC West's Jon Palmer picked up a narrow 4-3 decision.

Roseville freshman Jay'Den Williams rallied from a 6-3 deficit in the third period to win 9-8 in the quarters, and then advanced by injury default in the semis after 2x finalist Evan Herriman was unable to continue.  Defending state champ Clayton Jones of DCC will be his opponent in the finals.  Jones picked up a tech, a fall, and an 11-7 win the semis.

Lake Fenton's Jack Conley took down top-ranked Maddox Simcoe of Lowell in the quarters, 5-2, before besting teammate Noah Hall in the semis.  On the top half, Petoskey's Trevor Swiss made his first final with a 3-2 win in the semis.  Simcoe defeated teammate Miller in the blood round, 6-1

It's 1 vs 2 between top-ranked Cory Thomas of Pontiac and Zachary Jacobs of Jackson Northwest.  Jacobs survived a tight 3-2 semifinals match with Dobson.  In the blood round, Kyan Larson of Sparta got back on the podium with an OT win.

An all-Flint Metro League finals matchup here, and the fourth meeting of the year between finalists Philip Lamka of Fenton and Max Macklem of Goodrich.  Lamka leads the series 2-1 on the year.  Macklem won in OT over Martinez of Harper Creek in the semis.  Martinez won an OT match over Robinson of Plainwell in the quarters.

Lowell's Carson Crace avenged a loss from a week ago, winning 3-2 over Goodrich's Benson in the semis.  Brayden Gautreau of Gaylord won 10-5 in his semi over Badgley of Mason, in a rematch of last year's final.

Defending state champ Adam Haselius scored three first-period falls on his way back to the finals.  He'll take on junior Joey Scaramuzzino of Cros-Lex tomorrow evening, who picked up two decisions and a major.  DiFalco of Brandon pulled a pair of upsets and advanced to the semis.  Hastings sophomore Isaac Friddle was a bracket buster for the second straight year, making his way back on the podium with a pair of wins on the backside.

Lakeshore sophomore Brady Baker will take on St. Clair freshman Cristian Haslem in a matchup of first-time finalists.  Haslem scored a solid 8-6 win over Smith of Lowell in his semi.  In the blood round, OT wins were picked up by Brother Rice's Richie Davis and Middleville's Christien Miller.

All four wrestlers from the west regional advanced to the semis here and the finals will pit Lowell's Carter Cichocki against Hamilton's Malachi Kapenga.  Previously unbeaten Ramon of Allen Park fell to Kapenga in the quarters and then was bounced by St. Johns junior Sean Pettigrew in the blood round.

OLSM senior Marcello Milani has been dominant in his first trip to the state tournament, bonusing his way to the finals.  His opponent will be returning finalist Bryce Shingleton of Linden, a 5-4 winner in his semifinal.  DeWitt put two on the podium in Bashore and Lapaugh.

Great finals matchup between seniors Aaron Lucio of Lakeshore and Grant Stahl of Mt. Pleasant.  Lucio is a defending champ and advanced with two majors and a 7-1 semifinal win.  Stahl is a past runner-up, unbeaten on the year, and won 3-1 in OT in his semi.

Some interesting results throughout this weight.  Jackson Northwest's Gage Race won a tight 4-3 opening round match over regional champ Riedel before pinning returning finalist Tee Ward in the quarters.  On the bottom half, Gull Lake's Miller was upset in the opening round and set up a Ward-Miller blood round match which was #2 vs #5.  The top two seeds, Schwartz and Segorski, will square off in the finals.

Connor Owens of Flint Powers will look for his second state title as he takes on Kyan Fessenden of Kingsley.  Both scored two bonus point victories and had a decision of two points or less.  Dundee's Fenbert gave Durand's Alward his first loss of the year in the quarters, 6-3, before falling to Fessenden in the semis.

A lot of shakeups in this weight as top-ranked Kasner was defeated in the quarters by Laretz of Napoleon.  Belding sophomore Gavin Craner advanced to the finals with a 6-4 win over Laretz.  On the bottom half, Noah Etnyre of Lutheran Westland pinned his way to the finals, including a fall over #2 O'Boyle.

Kingsford notched a finalist with junior Elzin Rouse putting together a tremendous tournament which saw him give top-ranked Simon of Lakewood his first loss of the year in the semis.  He'll take on Bennett VandenBerg of Constantine in the finals, a winner of three decisions on the bottom side.  All four blood round matches were decided by three points or less.

Whitehall's Shane Cook remains unbeaten on the year as he rolled to the finals with two falls and a tech.  He'll face Birch Run senior Landen Roe, who won 4-3 and 3-1 in his two bouts.  A couple of narrow winners in the blood rounds - Lingeman of Central Montcalm, 6-4 in SV, and Spalo of Reed City, 2-1.

Dundee freshmen Haydn Nutt and Mason Haines will battle for the fifth time this season.  Nutt narrowly won all four prior meetings - 3-1, 4-2, 3-2, and 2-1 in TB.  Neither has allowed an offensive point this tournament.  Returning finalist Sopha won 2-0 in OT over returning all-stater Everett in a solid quarterfinal.

Returning state champ Talan Parsons has been dominant on his path to the finals with three state falls.  GRCC freshman Dale Gant won the rubber match with Broderick of Dundee, 4-3, and then picked up  a third period fall over Hansen of Gladstone in the semis.  Parsons has two wins over Gant this season, both by decision.
