Germaine Knocks Off Top-10 Foe for EMU

Swan Valley native Jared Germaine is now a perfect 10-0 on the year

Three of the four In-State D1 programs were in action over the weekend.  Michigan knocked off Purdue to open the Big Ten season, while CMU took a loss at the hands of Northern Iowa.  Meanwhile, EMU went 1-2 at the Pitt Duals, including a barnburner versus North Carolina.  Read below to get the notable matchups, as well as the results from Michigan natives who were in action.

#18 MICHIGAN 22, #20 PURDUE 12

The Wolverines opened up the Big Ten dual season with a convincing win over Purdue.  After falling behind 6-3 through the first three weights, Michigan strung together five wins in a row and put the dual out of reach.  Notable wins for the Maize and Blue included Conor Youtsey defeating NCAA Qualifer Camden Eppert, 7-4, and #7 Dan Yates rolling to a 8-4 decision against Chad Welch, who qualified for NCAA’s a year ago.  Adam Coon continued his impressive season with a 14-4 major decision to improve to 21-0 on the year.

CMU dropped a tough conference dual to the UNI Panthers in Cedar Falls on Saturday.  The dual got started with #7 Dylan Peters squeaking by CMU’s #13 Corey Keener, 9-6.  Then, at 133, the red-hot #2 Joe Colon knocked off #15 Joe Roth, 7-2.  UNI would extend their lead to 15-0 before Luke Smith put the Chipps on the board with a 4-0 decision.  At 174, #11 Mike Ottinger continued his stellar season by majoring #16 Cody Caldwell, 11-3.  In the end, UNI’s two falls proved to be the difference as they remain the frontrunners in the MAC.

EMU 26, DUKE 10

Eastern Michigan opened up their Sunday venture at the Pitt Duals against Duke.  The Eagles won seven weights and completely dominated the Blue Devils from beginning to end.  They opened up winning the first three weights and jumping out to a 13-0 lead.  At 157, Brandon Zeerip won 9-4 over Immanual Kerr-Brown.  Anthony Abro at 197 then knocked off 19th ranked Connor Hartmann in overtime to put an exclamation point on the dual.

This one got off to a good start for the Eagles as Jared Germaine manhandled #10 Nathan Kraisser, 9-3.  The Eagles were then shut out until 157 where Zeerip added his second win of the day.  At 184, a pair of NCAA Qualifiers went at it, and EMU’s Phillip Joseph knocked off Alex Utley, 4-1.  With UNC holding an 18-12 advantage heading into the final match, Khodor Hoballah needed to get a fall over Bob Coe.  Though he came close several times, he couldn’t quite secure the pin, and the 13-0 major decision wasn’t enough for the Eagles to overtake the Tar Heels.

This one looked like it was all EMU after the first three weights, as Germaine won by decision, while Vinnie Pizzuto and Nick Barber added major decisions to give EMU an 11-0 advantage.  From there it was all Wolfpack, as they won the final seven weights, including two falls and a technical fall.  Though EMU threw a couple non-starters into the lineup, it likely would not have made a difference, and put a bitter final touch to an otherwise solid day.
