On April 11th the University of Michigan solidified their heavyweight situation for the foreseeable future. The Wolverines received a commitment from class of 2016 standout Dan Perry of Lapeer. One of this season’s breakout stars, Perry posted a record of 61-0 along the way to a Division 1 state title, and then went on to earn runner-up honors at Flonationals.
Currently, U of M’s 285lbs spot is held by NCAA runner-up Adam Coon, but he’ll be out of eligibility in 2-3 years pending a redshirt. Whether it is in the fall of 2017 or 2018, Perry will have plenty of time to develop before he takes over the reins to the starting job.
Up to this point in his career Perry has been a standout on the gridiron as well as the mat, so when he gets to Ann Arbor it will be the first time that he commits himself to wrestling year round. As good as he is already, I get the sense that Perry is only beginning to scratch the surface of his potential.
Congrats to the Perry family and Lapeer wrestling!
