YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Freshman Logan Massa captured the 165-pound title to headline the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's performance at the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday (Nov. 7) at the Eagles' Bowen Field House. The Wolverines had 13 wrestlers entered -- many unattached -- and boasted eight individual placewinners.

Massa was impressive in his collegiate debut, posting a 5-0 record with two pins, a technical fall and two major decisions and outscoring 78-24 his opposition over the day. He earned a 15-5 major decision over Indiana's Devin Skatzka, quickly rallying from an early deficit to complete his perfect day. Massa evened the score on a reversal before scoring on a takedown and two-point tilt late in the opening period. He added three more takedowns, including two in the third period, and rode for 1:48 time advantage.

Freshman Sal Profaci and sophomore/freshman Malik Amine both bounced back from semifinal losses to place third at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Profaci, who went 4-1 in his collegiate debut, defeated Purdue's Jonathan Marmolejo, 5-2, in the third-place bout on a pair of takedowns, while Amine took advantage of a quick start -- a takedown and two-point near fall -- and riding time to beat Ashland's Mike Labry, 7-5, in his placing bout. Amine also went 4-1.

Massa and Profaci were among five Wolverine freshmen to compete in the open tournament -- all of whom place top eight. Jackson Striggow went 3-2 to claim seventh place at 197 pounds, while Mike Volyanyuk and Ben Lamantia took eighth place at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Striggow capped the day with a 4-0 decision against Eastern Michigan's Jared Langley in the seventh-place contest.

Sophomore/freshman Zehlin Storr and junior/sophomore Jordan Amine rounded out the Wolverines' placewinners. Storr went 5-2 en route to sixth place at 141 pounds, while Amine was 4-2 in a seventh-place finish at 157 pounds. Amine cruised past Central Michigan's Kaleb Rahoi, 7-2, in the placing bout.

The Wolverines will officially kick off the 2015-16 season in two weeks, heading to Troy, New York, for the annual Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals on Sunday, Nov. 15. U-M will face Sacred Heart (9:20 a.m.), West Virginia (11:15 a.m.) and Hofstra (3:15 p.m.).
