OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College wrestling program is sponsoring a MYWA Youth Wrestling Night at its match Thursday, Jan. 21, against Alma College. All MYWAY youth wrestlers will be admitted to the match free of charge. Action inside The Cutler Event Center starts at 7 p.m.
"I am looking forward to this match," said Olivet head coach Brandon Brissette. "The youth who come to watch will have the opportunity to see two of the best small-college wrestling teams battle one another. With our student body added in the mix, it should be a fun environment at the match."
This year marks the fifth time Alma and Olivet have faced each other on the wrestling mat since the Scots' resurrected their program in 2011. The Comets shutout Alma, 49-0, in the first meeting back in 2012. The Scots won the second match-up, 16-15. With the match tied at 15-15 after the 10 bouts, the Scots picked-up the final team point to win on criteria.
Olivet came back to win the next meeting, 28-10, during the 2014 season. The Scots returned the favor by winning last season's match by a similar score, 29-10. Ironically, in each of the four matches, the winning team has won in its own gym.
This season should be no different. The Comets, unranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, will take a 10-9 dual match record into the match, with a 10-3 mark against NCAA Division III competition. All three of the DIII losses were against ranked opponents and four additional defeats were against NCAA Division I schools.
Alma has been as high as No. 6 but is currently ranked No. 16 in the NWCA poll. The Scots bring an 11-5 record into the match.
Both teams are coming off impressive wins in their most recent dual match. Olivet scored bonus points in 6-of-8 wins to easily beat Trine (Ind.) University, 37-6, at Hershey Hall in Angola, Indiana. The Scots claimed wins in seven bouts to defeat Adrian College, 27-11, at the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center in Adrian.
