AMES, Iowa — The Central Michigan wrestling headed home Sunday night from its road trip to Iowa with mixed results.
After defeating Northern Iowa, 22-11, in a Mid-American Conference dual on Friday, The 21st-ranked Chippewas fell to No.17 Iowa State, 25-12, in a non-conference dual on Sunday afternoon.
“We just didn’t wrestle the way we wanted to (on Sunday),” CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. “We had a tough match on Friday and we came out really flat today which sometimes happens.”
The Chippewas slip to 6-4 with the loss. They are 3-1 in the MAC. The Cyclones are 8-5.
CMU was forced to open up the match with a six-point deficit after forfeiting the 125-pound weight class, a spot usually occupied by sophomore Brent Fleetwood who was injured in Friday’s meet with Northern Iowan.
“He injured his foot in our match with UNI, we certainly hope its nothing too significant,” Borrelli said “ It was something where we just didn’t think it would be smart to wrestle him in this one.”
Junior 133-pounder Corey Keener dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 9-ranked Earl Hall to put the Chippewas down 9-0.
CMU senior Zach Horan (141) stopped the bleeding with a 5-2 win over Nathan Boston.
Sophomore Justin Oliver (149) tied the meet with a second-period fall over Blayne Briceno and Luke Smith (157) claimed a 9-7 victory over Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer to give CMU a 12-9 lead.
It was the seventh-straight victory and the third pin of the year for Oliver, a redshirt freshman.
The Chippewas would not score again in the meet as Jordan Atienza (165), Mike Ottinger (174), Jordan Ellingwood (184), Jackson Lewis (197) and Newton Smerchekall suffered defeats.
Ottinger, a senior ranked No. 6 in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News, saw his win streak end at seven as he fell, 9-3, to No. 20 Lelund Weatherspoon.
“I thought Mike wrestled hard today he just got caught in a few counters today,” Borrelli said. “I’ve been pushing him to be more aggressive on offense and attack and I thought he was. He just got beat today.”
The Chippewas will hit the mats on Feb. 5 (7 p.m.) as they host Eastern Michigan (7-6, 2-4) in MAC dual at McGuirk Arena.
