Adam Coon is the only wrestler with Michigan ties still alive in a hunt for a trip to Rio and the 2016 Olympics.
Coon, a junior at the University of Michigan, blew through his first two matches this morning at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, IA. After a first round bye, Coon scored a 9-1 tech-fall over Donny Longendyke in the quarterfinals and then a 10-0 tech-fall over greco veteran Toby Ericson in the semifinals.
The former 4x State Champ from Fowlerville now advances to the 130kg Greco-Roman best of three finals tonight against returning World Team member Robbie Smith, who defeated Coon via tech-fall the last time they wrestled at the US Open a year ago.
Michigan's freestyle contingent had a rough start this morning, going 0-3 in the first round.
University of Michigan freshman Logan Massa lost a 13-11 thriller against the nation's top prep wrestler Mark Hall. Massa was leading 11-9 late when a 4 point throw from Hall proved to be the difference.
Davison native Jon Reader lost his first round bout to Austin Trotman 9-6, and then CMU 3x All-American Wynn Michalak dropped his quarterfinal match to Dustin Kilgore.
Cliff Keen WC member and former Olympian Jake Herbert, who trains out of Ann Arbor, also fell in the quarterfinals to Jden Cox.
Brighton native Jack Griggs and Sanford Meridian grad Eric Fader each went 0-2 in the Greco 130kg bracket, and greco veteran Matt Lamb fell to Toby Ericson in the quarterfinals.
