LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Sophomore/freshmen Stevan Micic and Logan Massa advanced to the semifinal round to pace the No. 10-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team on the first day of competition at the 35th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday (Dec. 2) at the Las Vegas Convention Center. With three additional Wolverines still alive in the consolation bracket, U-M sits in ninth place with 39.5 points.

Micic and Massa put up big points on the day, earning three bonus wins apiece at 133 and 165 pounds, respectively, to reach the CKLV semifinals in their first appearances at the prestigious tournament.

Micic, seeded third at 133 pounds, cruised in all three of his bouts, wrapping the day with a 17-4 major decision against Wyoming's Drew Templeman in the quarterfinal round after scoring five takedowns -- three in the first period -- a reversal and four back points. He boasted similar margins in the morning session, including a 19-4 technical fall over Edinboro's Korbin Myers in the first round behind six takedowns and six back points. Micic boasts bonus points in eight of his nine wins this season.

Massa, seeded second at 165 pounds, went 4-0 on the day, earning three straight bonus wins before settling for an 8-2 decision over Columbia's seventh-seeded Tyrel White in the quarterfinal round. He finished on three takedowns in the bout, including two in the first period, and rode for 1:14. Massa earned two falls in the preliminary rounds -- his second and third this season -- using a feet-to-back bodylock to stick American's Michael Eckhart at 1:48 in the pigtails and a leg turk to pin Cal Poly's Luke Wilson at 4:46 in the second round. He improved to 12-0 on the season,

Sophomore/freshman Sal Profaci, senior captain Brian Murphy and sophomore/freshman Myles Amine also wrestled in the quarterfinal round, dropping their bouts at 141, 157 and 174 pounds, respectively, to fall into the consolation bracket. They will need to win their first wrestleback match tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 3) to secure a spot on the podium.

Profaci, unseeded at 141 pounds, could not quite complete an attempted rally against CSU Bakersfield's Russell Rohlfing in the quarterfinal round, falling 13-6 despite scoring two takedowns in the third period. Profaci was doomed by a tough second period when Rohlfing earned a quick reversal and added four back points off a tilt. He earned a big win in the morning session, taking out Navy's sixth-seeded -- and 18th-ranked -- Jared Prince, 10-4, in the second round after finishing on four takedowns and riding for 1:32.

Murphy, the top seed at 157 pounds, was upset by Arizona State's eighth-seeded Josh Shields in the quarterfinal round after getting reversed to his back and pinned at the 3:20 mark. Murphy finished on a quick takedown to take the first lead, but Shields responded with two of his own to take a 6-4 lead into the second period. The Wolverine captain earned bonus points in his first bout of the season, scoring on six takedowns and riding for 3:58 to beat Clarion's Taylor Cahill.

Amine, seeded second at 174 pounds, dropped a close 4-3 decision to Arizona State's second-seeded Zahid in the quarterfinal round with a second-period takedown proving the difference. After a scoreless first period, Amine struck first on a quick reversal in the second, but Valencia escaped and converted on a single-leg takedown just seconds later to steal the lead. Amine earned bonus points with a 17-2 technical fall against Oregon State's Weston Dobler in the second round, scoring four takedowns and eight back points to end the bout at the 3:30 mark.

Five Wolverines were eliminated on the first day of competition after suffering their second losses of the day, most notably seeded lowerweights in sophomore/freshman Austin Assad and junior/sophomore Zac Hall at 125 and 149 pounds, respectively. The duo, along with freshman heavyweight Dan Perry, earned decision wins in their first matches of the day. Assad knocked off a Big Ten foe in Minnesota's Skylar Petry, scoring three takedowns in the first period to win, 7-3. Perry used a late reversal to secure a 7-5 decision against Western Wyoming's Wade French for his first varsity win.

Michigan will return to action tomorrow for the second and final day of competition at the 2016 Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada. U-M will hit the mat at 9 a.m. PST for the semifinals and continued wrestleback rounds, while the championships finals are slated for a 3 p.m. (PST) start.
