Six wrestlers with Michigan ties are still in the hunt to win a title at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite. The tournament, widely considered as one of the top in-season tournaments in college wrestling, has seen its share of upsets throughout the first day.
The University of Michigan advanced five guys into tomorrow morning's semifinals. Stevan Micic, Alec Pantaleo, Myles Amine, Domenic Abounader, and Adam Coon all punched their tickets with quarterfinals victories earlier this evening.
Amine had the toughest road, first knocking off #19 Josef Johnson of Harvard in the Round of 16, 7-0. He then survived a quarterfinal scare from CMU's 16th-ranked CJ Brucki. Brucki reversed Amine late in the third to go up by one, only to have Amine return the favor with a reversal of his own and take the 9-8 decision.
Central Michigan's Justin Oliver also advanced to the semis at 149 pounds. After outscoring his first three opponents 30-1, Oliver knocked off #12 Josh Maruca of Arizona State in the quarters, 9-4. Oliver, ranked 6th by Intermat, with take on 5th-ranked Colton McCrystal of Nebraska in the semis.
Maybe the most shocking news from day one came with the upset losses by Logan Massa and Kevin Beazley. Massa fell to Wisconsin's #17 Evan Wick in the quarters, 8-4. Beazley dropped his round of 16 match to Tom Lane of Cal Poly. Both are still alive in the wrestlebacks and will look to march to a third-place finish for the Wolverines.
Ten with Michigan ties are still alive in the Round of 12 wrestlebacks - Drew Mattin, Mason Smith, Kanen Storr, Nate Limmex, Logan Massa, CJ Brucki, Max Dean, Jordan Ellingwood, Kevin Beazley, and Gage Hutchison.
From a team standpoint, Michigan leads the field with 90 points. Central Michigan is also in the top-ten, sitting in seventh place with 52 points. EMU and MSU sit in 22nd and 31st, respectively.
