Midlands Day 1 Recap

By MI Grappler, 12/29/17, 11:30PM EST

Limmex and Weaver Set for Semifinal Showdown at 141

The first day of the Midlands Championships has come to a close in Hoffman Estates, Illinois and a slew of Michigan grapplers are in a good position to cap off a great weekend.  Six are wrestling in the semifinals and eleven others are one win from placing at the prestigious tournament.

141 features three former Michigan high school standouts all in the semifinals.  Top seeded Mason Smith has stormed through the bracket, outscoring his opponents 28-2 over four matches.  He'll take on 13th ranked Tyler Smith of Bucknell.

The bottom half of the bracket pits Hudson's Cole Weaver and GRCC's Nate Limmex against each other, both wrestling for Hoosier universities now.  Limmex entered the tournament unseeded while Weaver was the 3 seed.  To our knowledge the last time these two met was in the second round of the 2011 GFC; Limmex won that meeting 2-0.

Two other Chippewas, Jordan Ellingwood and returning finalist Justin Oliver, have each advanced to the semis as well at 184 and 149, respectively.  They'll face a pair of wrestlers hailing from Princeton - Kolodzik the 7th ranked 149 in the country, Jackson an RTC athlete and coach for the Tigers.

The other semifinalist is U of M's Garrett Sutton at 174 pounds.  Sutton entered the tournament as the 13th seed but upset 4th seeded Seldon Wright of ODU and 5th seeded CJ Brucki from CMU in back-to-back matches to advance to tomorrow's semi.  He'll have a tough test with top-ranked Zahid Valencia of ASU as his opponent.

Among those in need of a first round win in the morning to secure a top-eight finish are three wrestlers from EMU (Springer, Carson, and MacCallum) and a trio from CMU (Parks, Brucki, and Stencel.  They're joined by Michigan natives now wrestling out-of-state Schroder, Bleise, Skatzka, and Dean.  Jackson Striggow of Michigan makes eleven total in the bloodround.

CMU has compiled a quality team showing and currently sits in 5th place, trailing 4th-place South Dakota State by 3 points.  With six wrestlers still alive, they could make some serious gains on day two.

Take a look below at the matchups that will take place in the first session tomorrow.  The round kicks off at 1:00 pm EST and can be viewed on Flowrestling.
