Mutschler, Gates, Stevens Turn in Top-Four Finishes

Lowell junior heavyweight Tyler Delooff led a Michigan contingent of 20-plus wrestlers at the IndianaMat Hoosier Preseason Open on Sunday by winning the 288 pound title.

Delooff was dominant all tournament long, winning by scores of 9-1, 6-1, and 7-1 to reach the finals.  In the finals he built a lead before pinning Cadet Greco National Champ and Double AA Alex Coleman of Ohio.

Red Arrow teammate Avry Mutschler also turned in a good showing at 148 pounds.  The 2018 D2 runner-up won five matches before falling in the finals to Nate Wheeler of Kentucky.  Mutschler notably knocked off a pair of state placers - one from Ohio and Indiana - in the quarters and semis.

Marysville's Nick Gates had a breakout tournament at 155 pounds.  A state qualifier a year ago, Gates went 4-1 en route to a runner-up finish.  He upset 3x all-stater Trevor Robinson of Shepherd, 5-1, in the quarters and took out Kentucky placer Wyatt Andreoni 3-0 in the semis to earn a finals berth.

Greyson Stevens was the fourth placer from Michigan, placing 4th at 198 pounds.  The Brighton junior battled back from an early loss and won five straight matches to advance to the consolation finals and lock up a placing finish.

Other notable performances included Clarkston's Cole Wiegers (129) and DeWitt's Tyler Brandt (148) who both went 5-2 on the tournament.  Whitehall freshman Max Brown was 4-2 at 129 pounds as well.
